More Olympic fever and tickets!

We continue to get into the Olympics, one day after the official start. Friday morning we rode the subway to the Olympic line stop just to see what was going on. We couldn't even get on the Olympic line 8 without an opening ceremony ticket- security was so tight. But we walked around the area and saw many fans. There is a neat section of a long open area flanked by two red columns that provides a direct view to the Bird's Nest- still a couple of miles away at this subway stop. We walked around in the heat and then had lunch at McDonald's (somehow seemed appropriate with the Olympics and Austin loved it). We did what the vast majority of Beijingers did Friday night- watched the ceremony on TV in our neighborhood. We went to a potluck dinner with a large group of people down the road, but then went to our neighbor's house to watch the actual ceremony while Austin slept in his tent. We definitely enjoyed it though had to work hard to stay awake at the end. We ran outside to try and see the fireworks from our apartment, but we were too far or the sky to hazy too see that far.

Exciting news today- on this website we have been using some gymnastics tickets opened up, so tomorrow afternoon Chris and I are going to a qualifying round! We don't know which teams are in our session ( we go to one of four happening tomorrow) but it will be fun. A little while after purchasing those, our neighbor Mark called and said they had gotten 4 swimming tickets for tomorrow night- did we want to go? A definite yes, we want to see something in the Cube. So now we have a full day of events tomorrow. We have two different babysitters to watch Austin- we will be gone most of the day. With security lines, you have to get there early and there isn't enough time to get back in between. So hopefully Austin will have a good day without us.

Here are a few pictures from our outing Friday morning. We hopefully will have some more fun ones tomorrow.

An excited fan outside the subway stop

Outside the security check to get to the Olympic line 8 subway. Yes, my belly is big!

Signs pointing you to different event locations outside the subway.

The bird's nest is at the end of this long column and across fourth ring road...but you could barely see it from here on Friday.

One of the columns at the beginning of this park looking out to the Bird's Nest.
